Phaedra’s Love
of Sarah Kane
It is a happy day for the palace. The royal family celebrates the 24th birthday of Prince Hippolytus. People arrive everywhere to give him their admiration and their gifts. Phaedra, his stepmother, has a special gift for him that causes the celebration to end in tragedy and the birthday to end in a family massacre. Royal status collapses in one evening. Sarah Kane’s interpretation of the ancient myth of Phaedra evokes the question: what defines an abuser? Themes of sexual desire and secrets, redemptive love, and violence in all forms become the impetus for an unconscious journey to the hidden parts of one’s personality.
